 Arts & Sciences Competition

The Estrella War Arts & Sciences Competition is an inter-kingdom competition held to allow artisans to both contribute to the outcome of a medieval style two-sided war between allied SCA Kingdoms, and receive feedback about their work from an inter-kingdom judging team. Each year, the competition is:

  • Coordinated by Atenveldt’s Minister of Arts & Sciences
  • Open to any entrants who wish to compete
  • Limited to three categories of Arts and Sciences
  • Governed by rules agreed to and published in the annual Estrella War Treaty negotiated between participating SCA Kingdoms in October of the year before the event

The categories for competition at each war are selected at least 15 months in advance by Crowns & Heirs during the annual Treaty Negotiations for each war, giving artisans ample time to prepare entries for the competition.  For example, the categories for the Estrella War XXVII (February 2011) Arts & Sciences Competition were negotiated and published in the Treaty for Estrella War XXVI (February 2010).

ESTRELLA WAR XXVII ARTS & SCIENCES COMPETITION CATEGORIES

  • Toys – Includes any item used by children in Western Europe during the SCA time period. An entry may have several pieces that are all used for the same item (ex. Wooden blocks).
  • Heraldic Banner, Flag or Standard – A single item may represent any group within the SCA, and must be completed in fabric. Decoration may be done by any medium documentable to the SCA time period, e.g., painting, embroidery, appliqué. Heraldry should be SCA-specific, registered heraldry.
  • Woven Textiles – Includes card weaving, tapestry weaving, and the production of woven fabrics, e.g., brocade, damask, plain, satin, tapestry, twill, etc. Each entry should be a complete length of weave of something that is ready to be sewn or otherwise completed.

The rules used to judge the above categories in the Estrella War Arts & Sciences Competition will not be available until the Estrella War XXVII Treaty is published (November 2010).

You can learn more about how this competition has been run in prior years on the Estrella page of the Kingdom of Atenveldt Ministry of Arts & Sciences website. Pre-registration form links for the competition, as well as the rules and explanatory material for the prior year competions, may be found there. If you are interested in judging or assisting with running the competition, or you have questions about the categories for the competition, please contact Atenveldt’s Minister of Arts & Sciences.
